Extra Care Schemes

Extra Care Schemes are a type of home for older people with services that adapt as needs change over time, allowing you to live well, age well and stay well.

While living at an Extra Care scheme you can retain as much independence as you choose. You will have your own apartment with your own front door to come and go as you please, but there are also shared facilities like lounge areas, restaurants, hobby rooms and other facilities that you can use when you want company. As we get older, loneliness is an important issue, so Extra Care offers neighbourly companionship in a friendly environment, as and when you want it.

If you become more dependent on others to do the things you used to do for yourself, it is possible to have adaptions made to your home by accessing our home care or support services (scheme dependant). These services will help you stay at home for as long as possible.

All of our extra care schemes have:

  • enough space for wheelchairs in all apartments
  • mobility scooter charging
  • communal facilities such as a hair salon, laundry and shop
  • catering on site so you don’t have to eat alone
  • craft/hobby rooms for activities
  • space for physical activities and perhaps gym equipment
  • security and 24-hour personal alarm systems

Extra care apartments are designed to be part of the local community rather than separate from it and local people are encouraged to come in and use, for example, the restaurant, shop or craft rooms. This helps to keep the schemes busy and vibrant, integrating the scheme into the community. Some schemes may also have a GP or other health facilities attached.

Testimonials

My family are more relieved about me moving here - none of us knew what extra care meant, but now we all feel that I will be well looked after if my needs change.

It's up to you how much you get involved. Sometimes I just want to find a nice spot to sit and read. Other times I'll join in with what's going on. It's nice to have a choice.

Maes Mwldan is nothing like I expected. It really is a home for life and I am glad that I made the move. Being able to just press a buzzer if you need help is very reassuring.
